Department of Anesthesiology

Basic Science Research

The Basic Science Research Division is dedicated to the study of anesthetic mechanisms and molecular pharmacology, neurophysiology, biophysics, biochemistry, and cardiac physiology. The Department of Anesthesiology has several principal investigators, most of whom have independent NIH funding.

Basic Science research conducted by the Department of Anesthesiology is featured in several of the world’s most prominent scientific and specialty journals, including Nature, Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, Journal of Neuroscience, Natural Structure & Molecular Biology, Neuron, EMBO Journal, Anesthesiology, PLOS ONE, and the Journal of Neurophysiology. 

Some of our principal investigators and links to their labs are featured below. The laboratories have trained a significant number of postdoctoral fellows who have gone on to successful research careers. Research opportunities exist for students of all levels.

The Accardi Laboratory
The lab aims to elucidate the structural and mechanistic underpinnings of ion and lipid transport.
dr. Calderon
The Calderon Laboratory
The lab is interested in understanding how the different arousal pathways' participate in establishing and maintaining consciousness in the brain.
The Goldstein Laboratory
The focus of the lab has been to better define the mechanisms by which a diverse group of pharmacological agents produces anesthesia.
Dr. Hemmings
The Hemmings Laboratory
The lab studies the effects of general anesthetics on neurotransmitter release and their interactions between specific presynaptic proteins.
The Nimigean Laboratory
Focus: how ion channel protein structure and mechanism interrelate at the molecular level to allow channels to elaborate various biological properties.
Dr. Platholi
The Platholi Laboratory
Focus: how anesthetic modulation of activity-dependent signaling molecules contribute to sustained and pathological actions on synaptic plasticity.
The Riegelhaupt Laboratory
The lab is focused on understanding the physiology and pharmacology of tandem pore (K2P) potassium ion channels.
Dr. Scheuring
The Scheuring Laboratory
Focus: Atomic Force Microscopy based technologies for the study of various membrane phenomena.
