Extended Reality Anesthesiology Immersion Lab (XRAIL)

Extended reality (XR) is a novel form of spatial computing that we believe can improve medical education and clinical practice. XR is an umbrella term that consists of virtual reality (VR), which is 360-degree immersion into a digital space, and augmented reality (AR), which overlays digital information or objects onto a person's physical surroundings.

Objectives

The Extended Reality Anesthesiology Immersion Lab (XRAIL) aims to develop:

  • Pre-procedural Planning for Patient Care and Safety
We design XR training programs specific to perioperative and pain medicine to provide learners with immersive experiences and allow clinicians the opportunity to engage in enhanced pre-procedural planning.

  • Peer-to-peer Communications
The XRAIL group conducts simulations for procedural and non-procedural learning in multi-user virtual environments where teachers and learners across disciplines can come together.

  • Soft Skills Training
We design AI-assisted training for soft skills development for healthcare workers in virtual, remote environments with a focus on competencies such as conflict resolution, ethics, diversity/inclusion training, and public speaking/communication.
