Simon Scheuring, PhD has been appointed as Distinguished Professor of Anesthesiology Research, effective December 1, 2023. Dr. Scheuring is a professor of physiology and biophysics in anesthesiology.
This distinguished professorship recognizes Dr. Scheuring’s international leadership in the development and use of high-speed atomic force microscopy to study membrane protein structure, macromolecular assemblies, and protein diffusional and conformational dynamics, and his advancement of our understanding of the biophysiological processes of the cell.

Simon’s innovative approaches to visualizing the molecular dynamics regulating cell function are both groundbreaking and breathtaking, and worthy of this recognition,” said Dr. Hugh Hemmings, the Joseph F. Artusio, Jr Professor and Chair of the Department of Anesthesiology.
Dr. Scheuring was born in Switzerland and earned his master’s degree and PhD in biochemistry from the Biozentrum at the University Basel, Switzerland. Prior to joining the faculty of Weill Cornell Medicine in 2017, he was research director at the Institute Curie in Paris and at INSERM / Aix-Marseille University in Marseille, France. Dr. Scheuring is the author of more than 110 peer reviewed publications in journals such as Nature, Science, Cell, and PNAS, along with more than 45 review articles and didactic writings. He was awarded an NIH Director’s Pioneer Award in 2019, and a WM Keck Foundation Medical Research Grant in 2022.
