Veterinary Anesthesia Elective Begins

March 10, 2015

We are thrilled here at Weill Cornell to have begun our first Veterinary Anesthesia elective in Ithaca, New York at Cornell University’s Veterinary College. Dr. Stephanie Vecino was the lucky CA-3 chosen to take part in this week’s inaugural experience and below is an excerpt from her elective journal.

Today the vet anesthesia residents took me out to breakfast at College Town Bagels and then gave me a tour of the vet hospital. It felt odd seeing animals walking around the halls and in the vet ICU! I then helped induce a 1kg miniature Yorkie who was having spinal surgery. She was so tiny that we used a neonate sized ETT and monitors on her. After that I saw a horse induction and intubation for an MRI. This process required several people and lots of ketamine, not to mention the ETT size was enormous! I spent the afternoon helping the vet anesthesia residents induce other cats and dogs and then I ended my day with afternoon "rounds" which meant the vet students on their anesthesia rotation presented the cases for the next day along with their anesthetic plan. Overall, it was a very successful first day here!

While on Veterinary Anesthesia rotation, Dr. Vecino helped a miniature Yorkie (left) receive spinal surgery and helped a cat receive anesthesia.

The Veterinary Anesthesia resident rotation is an amazingly unique opportunity for our residents to return to basic principles of physiology, pharmacology, and anatomy while learning from the brilliant and talented Veterinary Anesthesiology upstate.
