A Visit from a Veterinary Anesthesiologist

October 9, 2014

Last week, during one of our weekly ‘standing room only’ Thursday Resident Case Conferences, we had the pleasure of hearing a talk from a third-year Veterinary Anesthesiology Resident from the Cornell University College of Veterinary Medicine. We have been fortunate to have similar visits from the Vet School in the past (one of my favorite lectures during my own residency here at Weill Cornell) and they have been incredibly enjoyable and intriguing. Dr. Tasha Bartel was brilliant! She came with pictures, props, and video clips and gave an hour-long talk about her residency life in Ithaca. For all of you out there thinking that you’re applying to competitive anesthesiology residency programs, consider this: there are only nine Veterinary Anesthesia spots in North America every year and their Board’s pass rate is in the twenties! Dr. Bartel’s talk was amazingly fun for our residents and we are in the very beginning phases of imagining how our residents might be able to spend time in Ithaca. I envision an incredible educational opportunity for my housestaff to learn from the Veterinary Anesthesia providers. Adaptability, flexibility, the breadth and scope of the anatamoic and physiologic variants to consider when anesthetizing  hundreds of different species…. If you’re interested in administering anesthesia beyond Homo sapiens, start by watching the video below.
