Study by the Hemmings Lab Provides Insight on Cellular Communications

Scientists have long understood that anesthesia affects communication between nerve cells, or neurons.  However, little is known about how exactly they work in the brain to block sensation and induce unconsciousness.  Now, in their study, published online Sept. 9 and in the September 22, 2015 issue of the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, Drs Baumgart, Zhou and the Hemmings Lab with colleagues at Weill Cornell Medicine, Dartmouth College and Kurume University School of Medicine in Japan discovered where in the brain this happens.

The authors on the study are Drs. Joel P. Baumgart , Zhenyu Zhou  , Masato Hara, Daniel C. Cook '15, Michael B. Hoppa , Timothy A. Ryan, and Hugh Hemmings.
