Helping New Yorkers Manage and Understand Pain: Weill Cornell Pain Medicine Physicians Busy with Recent Community Outreach Efforts

The physicians of Weill Cornell Pain Medicine have had a busy fall 2014. Pain Medicine physicians have been active in multiple educational events in the community throughout the fall, and the Pain Medicine Downtown Practice moved into a new purpose-built office in early November. All together, the physicians and staff of the Pain Medicine Center continued the work of advancing its clinical, educational, and research missions, all to help patients manage and treat chronic and acute pain.

In September, Dr. Neel Mehta, Director of Pain Medicine and Assistant Professor of Anesthesiology was a featured speaker at Weill Cornell Medical College’s Myra Mahon Patient Resource Center. “The Story of Back Pain” was a seminar in the Center’s Health Education Seminar Series. The event featured Dr. Mehta, as well as Neurologist Dr. Bridget Carey, Physiatrist Dr. Ricky Singh, and Neurosurgeon Dr. Roger Hartl. The seminar offered attendees perspectives on the nature of back pain and the various methods available to manage and treat it.

On November 13, Dr. Lisa Witkin, Site Director of Pain Medicine,  New York-Presbyterian/Lower Manhattan Hospital, participated in a group talk with Dr. Joshua Weaver of Neurology, entitled “Spine Health: Help Is on the Way for Neck and Back Pain.” The talk was sponsored by the law firm Cadwalader, Wickersham & Taft, LLP. Dr. Weaver and Dr. Witkin offered tips for promoting spine health and discussed some of the latest treatments available Over fifty people attended the talk and it was broadcast to multiple sites, nationally and internationally. Dr. Witkin and Dr. Weaver were also part of a lively Q&A at the end of their main talks. Both Dr. Witkin and Dr. Weaver practice out of downtown offices affiliated with NewYork-Presbyterian/Lower Manhattan Hospital, and this talk was part of their ongoing efforts to remain connected with the Lower Manhattan community.

On November 18, both Dr. Mehta and Dr. Witkin were featured speakers in a Special Health Seminar at the Myra Mahon Patient Resource Center, “New Advances in Knee Pain Treatment.” The talk was well-attended, with an excellent turn-out. The Fall 2014 talks were part of Pain Medicine's year-round effort at communicating the latest information about pain managment and tratment with the New York City community. The faculty and staff of Weill Cornell Pain Medicine remain committed to community outreach as a vital part of educational and patient care missions.
