Daniel Cook, Medical Student in Hemmings Lab, Honored at Weill Cornell Medical Student Research Day

Weill Cornell Medical College held its annual Medical Student Research Day on Thursday, March 20, 2014. Medical Student Daniel C. Cook was awarded second place in the competition for a poster entitled, “Differential effects of isoflurane on voltage-gated calcium channels subtypes in hippocampal neurons.” He collaborated with Dr. Zhenyu Zhou and Dr. Hugh Hemmings. Daniel is currently working as a medical student researcher in the Hemmings Lab.

Daniel Cook is a native of Dover, Massachusetts and earned his Bachelor’s degree from Tufts University, where he majored in chemical physics. As a student, he conducted research in the use of video-rate multiphoton microscopy for intravital tumor biology studies. Daniel is currently on a research leave of absence between his third and fourth year as a medical student at Weill Cornell. His work in the Hemmings Lab is being supported by a Howard Hughes Medical Institute Medical Fellows research grant. Interested in continuing his study of anesthesiology, Daniel plans on applying to anesthesiology residency programs next year, and he wants to continue research into the effects of general anesthesia within the central nervous system.

The research study of Daniel Cook, Dr. Zhou, and Dr. Hemmings investigated the role of voltage-gated calcium channels (VGCCs) in mediating the inhibition of neurotransmitter release by volatile anesthetics in the central nervous system (CNS). The poster was one of over two-dozen entered in the Medical Student Research Day competition. The Hemmings Lab and the Department of Anesthesiology congratulate Daniel Cook on his accomplishment.
