Cynthia Ann Lien, M.D., Professor of Anesthesiology at Weill Cornell Medical College and Attending Anesthesiologist at NewYork-Presbyterian, was recently elected President of the American Board of Anesthesiology (ABA). Dr. Lien is the Department of Anesthesiology’s Vice Chair for Education. She has been a Director of the ABA since 2004.
The ABA was founded in 1938 and is the United States’ major certifying body for Anesthesiologists. The Board administers primary and subspecialty certification exams for anesthesiologists and also administers a continuing certification exam, the Maintenance of Certification in Anesthesiology Program (MOCA). The ABA is a member board of the American Board of Medical Subspecialties.
Dr. Lien was elected to a one-year term of President of the American Board of Anesthesiology at the October meeting of the Board of Directors. Throughout her tenure as a Director of the ABA, Dr. Lien has been involved in revising both initial certification and maintenance of certification. During her presidency, as the first class of residents educated under in the new certification process of the ABA completes their training, the ADVANCED Examination will be introduced. Enrollment in MOCA 2.0 for maintenance of certification will open in January of 2016 – opening a new chapter as the ABA engages physicians in lifelong education.
