Anesthesiology Residents Tackle Quality Improvement Initiatives

The Department of Anesthesiology’s Quality and Patient Safety team, in collaboration with the residency program, held a Quality Improvement workshop for second-year residents on July 13.  Led by Anit Makhija and Michelle Evangelista, clinical systems engineers who are instructors from NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital’s Quality Division, the full-day course was designed to give residents the tools and methodology they need to successfully conduct a quality improvement initiative.

Leading up to the course, participants reflected on initiatives they’d like to tackle, based on their experiences during the intern year. One group, for example, focused on improving a step in the pre-operative process for pediatric patients and their parents.

The workshop broke down the steps involved in getting such a project off the ground — “how do you define a problem statement, how do you create an intervention, how do you see if it works?” explained Nicole Hitti, the Quality and Patient Safety administrator for the department.

The goal, she added, is learning to improve a healthcare system, and ultimately to improve patient safety.
